Hygge

Hygge is a Danish term which means to create a warm, comforting space.  I believe it is derived from Hygga, which is an ancient Norse word meaning "to comfort".  Hygge has recently become quite trendy, I'm assuming with interior designers, but also as a feeling every day folk are trying to create and achieve.  I've been doing it for the past couple of years as a way to offset my partner's seasonal depression, or "winter blues".  It's quite effective.  Here are a couple things I do that create warmth during the cold months.
  1. Vacation coffee (no brainer).
  2. Bringing outside inside.  Throughout the year I collect things I find on trips such as stones I like, feathers, I have a cool birch log, and pine cones.  I also keep live plants in nearly every room in the house.  During Christmas I bring pine boughs in and place them in vases and along the mantel.
  3. Blankets blankets everywhere!  Every chair or couch has 2 blankets minimum.  And, with blankets come...
  4. Pillows pillows everywhere! Still working on my pillow game.
  5. Candles.  Yes I know I shouldn't have things that are flammable BUT too bad.  I will make a compromise with twinkly lights this year.
  6. Books everywhere.  This one is unique to me, and I know there are libraries, but owning and having access to all of my books brings me a very happy feeling.  It's not as zero waste as I'd like to be, but it's my vice.  Also, I can't wait for winter days with warm coffee, blankets, and curling up with a book.

What does your hygge look like?
How do you hygge?  Does your culture have a different term for hygge?  Let me know.

Sunday Volition: Monday Edition

10/15/2018

We all know what really happened. I got wrapped up in Love Sac talk and forgot to include my goals for the week.  I am happy to report I met last weeks goal of 25 rolls and got 3 bonus rolls for a total of 28.  I got 2 out of my 3 lifting days in, I was present and mindful at the Rupi Kaur book tour with my friend and sister, and I mostly kept up with #runtober for myself and the dogs.  Sadly, I did not follow through on my glass containers to purchase proteins, and it bugs me.  BUT, why is it cheaper to buy the same chicken wrapped in styrafoam vs. me providing transport and them having to do less work?  I'll never know mainly because I'm too lazy to care and I'll pay the extra dollar per pound.
This weeks volitions include:
  1. Just keep on keepin on with #runtober.  I already got it in this morning.
  2. Get all 3 lifting days in.
  3. 30 rolls for the week or 150 minutes of mat time (this does not include class time or drilling).
  4. One big blog per week. I'm doing good with the daily's.
  5. Get a weekly dusting/vacuuming schedule going.

My Vacation Coffee Morning Routine

10/4/2018

I wake up around 6:30am and start boiling water for a french press.  I grind the beans to slightly coarse and scoop the exact amount needed into the press.  After the water is done boiling I let it rest 1 minute before slow pouring it over the grounds.  I give it a quick stir and let the mixture steep for 4 minutes.  One more stir.  A firm press.  Bam. Perfect vacation coffee.  I then sit at the kitchen counter and enjoy a book for a good hour before the rest of the house wakes.

What is your morning routine?  Could it be slowed down?   I love hearing about other people's daily habits,  and you may discover a new idea of your own.
